Fresno State looks to be undergoing a complete rebuild, as the program decided to move on from coach Justin Hutson after 6 years. Former Sacramento Kings assistant Vance Walberg will be taking over the program after a disappointing 2023-24 where the Bulldogs finished just 4-14 in the Mountain West and 12-21 overall. Walberg is known as the developer of the dribble drive motion offense that many coaches use today, as this 4 out 1 in style helps space the floor and open up the paint for drivers.
The brand new roster for this Bulldogs team creates a lot of uncertainty on both ends of the floor. We know the style of offense that Walberg wants to run, but it will be a matter of how efficient this group can be in executing that style. There are 3 junior college transfers in the projected rotation in Jasir Tremble, Amar Augillard, and Alex Crawford so we won’t really know how this group will look until we see them in Division I action, but you have to assume it will take some time for them to adjust to a higher level of basketball. There is a lack of Division I experience across the entire roster, as there are 5 Freshmen on the bench and only 4 players on the team with any Division I minutes. Hawaii transfer Mor Seck may provide some sort of rim presence, but his impact will be made more on the defensive end. Seck didn’t play major minutes for Hawaii in his 2 seasons, but his rim protection and athleticism at the center position stood out when he was on the floor. Seck and redshirt Freshman Elijah Price will provide some resistance on defense, but the rest of the roster is almost a complete unknown on that end.
It’s difficult to evaluate a team that is under such a heavy rebuild, but it is probably safe to say they are a bottom 3 team in the Mountain West, if not at the very bottom. There are too many players stepping up in class who are playing major roles for this Fresno State team, and they may find themselves falling apart early. Maybe Vance Walberg can turn this program around quicker than expected, but not in the 2024-25 season.
