Ed Cooley’s second season at Georgetown is shaping up to be better than his first. He hit the transfer portal this offseason bringing in sophomore guard, Malik Mack, from Harvard, and Micah Peavy from TCU. Cooley also brought in a solid recruiting class led by big man Thomas Sorber. The biggest losses happened in the frontcourt losing Supreme Cook and Ish Massoud. Among other losses was Dontrez Styles, who was the Hoyas second leading scorer last season.
The rim protection of the Hoyas last season was pretty nonexistent. This season, they have a new frontcourt in Thomas Sorber and Drew Fielder. Sorber, a freshman, and Fielder, who was originally committed to play for Cooley at Providence, played limited minutes as a freshman last season. Now they will be turned upon to hold down the frontcourt of the Hoyas defense, which will be a tall task in the Big East with so little experience. However, Cooley does a great job of getting his guys to compete and get the best out of them, so it would not be surprising to see those two take huge strides over the course of the season. The rebounding is a huge question mark, too, as they lost their two leading rebounders from last season. On a team that was already 351st in defensive rebounds per game, they are not exactly in a great spot with that. They have a very talented backcourt offensively who will get their fair share of steals, but they won’t be the defensive stoppers they need them to be to cover up the blemishes of the rest of the defense.
Georgetown’s offense will be much improved from last season due to the new weapons they have added. Jayden Epps, their leading scorer from last season, is back and his new running mate in the backcourt in Malik Mack was a dynamic player at Harvard last season as a freshman, making himself one of the most highly sought after transfers. Along with Micah Peavy, those three should lead the offense. The only concern with those three is the lack of efficiency, especially from three, since Malik Mack shot it at the highest percentage last season at just 34.1%. This could pose problems clogging up the lane for the dynamic guards to get to the hoop with teams being willing to give up the three more than mid-range and layups. The interior offense is a huge question mark, much like the defense, since they are so inexperienced there. Between Jordan Burks, a transfer from Kentucky, Thomas Sorber, and Drew Fielder, none of them have played many meaningful minutes at the college level. This will be an offense heavily reliant on their guards, at least for this season, and their success will depend on increased efficiency from the three guards.
Ed Cooley’s Georgetown Hoyas will win more than 9 games in 2024, but it still won’t be enough to get them to the Big Dance. They will compete with teams due to their dynamic guard play and improved offense keeping them in games, but they are probably going to have to outscore good teams to win. Even if they force a missed shot, they do not have solid rebounders to close out possessions, so their offense better be really good. Expect a better season, but still no appearance in postseason basketball during the Ed Cooley era until at least 2025-2026.
