Key Losses

Carey Booth

On the defensive end there are concerns about rim protection and rebounding. The loss of Carey Booth may prove to be significant if the combo of Kebba Njie and Nikita Konstantynovskyi can’t hold their own. Outside of that, there shouldn’t be too many concerns with the defense as most of Shrewsberry’s core guys are back and this group finished 43rd in Adjusted defensive rating a season ago (per Torvik). The Fighting Irish do a solid job at limiting transition and Shrewsberry is a great defensive game planner in general. The defensive side of the ball should continue to be more of the backbone of this team.

The offensive end definitely still has its concerns, but the fact they are bringing back their starting backcourt should automatically improve this unit from a season ago (223rd Adjusted Offense per Torvik). Rising Sophomore Markus Burton had a ton on his shoulders a year ago (33.6% usage) and he will have a similar workload again, but the addition of sharpshooter Matt Alloco should give him at least some help. The ceiling will still be very limited offensively with this group due to being weak scoring inside the arc and not rebounding well, but the added floor spacing is certainly what Micah Shrewsberry prefers in his offense. 4-star recruits Sir Mohammed and Cole Certa may be able to help inside the arc.

Overall, there is optimism that Notre Dame will be an improved team in year 2 of the Shrewsberry era, as they didn’t lose a ton to the portal along with adding some solid rotation players. Although I don’t see the Irish making the NCAA tournament, this team could easily finish in the middle of the pack of the ACC.
